John James Audubon is an idol to a lot of us. Born on this date in Haiti in 1785, Audubon tried his hand at business ventures, even right here in Illinois, but failed at all of them. Finally he and his wife, Lucy, agreed that he should pursue his dream of painting every species of bird in North America. "Breaking away from the wooden depictions of birds prevalent at the time, Audubon filled his canvases with action and life," states the 1994 introduction to "Birds of America."

As Mr. Audubon himself says(!) - celebrate this day by enjoying the wilds of Chicago. Go for a hike in the forest preserves, wander along the Des Plaines or the Fox River. On this day, hundreds of thousands of birds are migrating through from the rainforests to boreal forests of Canada. And take a photo or video of your sightings and share it at #NatureLovesChicago.

Thanks to Brian "Fox" Ellis, who has been portraying John James Audubon for 20 years. He is launching a new podcast on YouTube at Fox Tales International.
