One of the great technological innovations in birding in recent years is the ability to forecast migration activity through radar. The above picture shows Cornell Lab of Ornithology's BirdCast forecast for tonight. According to BirdCast, southeast winds will bring some bird migration to the Northeast region of the country. An easterly component will result in more birds stopping inland versus the coast.

Locally, with showers in the forecast, it's a good day to look for birds like the Hermit Thrush, the first of the brown thrushes that move through our area. Hermit Thrushes have been present for a couple of weeks now, and they can be seen in most any habitat during migration. Look for their reddish tail, which often cocks upward and drops slowly back down.

We'll check back with BirdCast as the weeks progress. It's a great tool to refer to as you are planning your birding!
