Feminist Bird Club started on the East Coast in 2016, and its Chicago chapter launched two years ago this month. Feminist Bird Club aspires to a nature ethos rooted in inclusivity--its events aim to be a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community, women, people of color and black/indigenous individuals.

In traditional birding circles, there is a tendency to display one's knowledge as a badge, to be the first to identify an unusual species or the first to point out a distant song. Feminist Bird Club upends this by focusing on eliminating the "knowledge hierarchy." On its field trips, the club offers attendees "autonomy over identification" and stops for everyone to see a species before moving along. What's more, the Chicago chapter has raised more than $2,000 for local charities since its inception.

Feminist Bird Club member Rachel Kimpton made this video for Nature Loves Chicago, describing her surroundings in Washington Park on the city's South Side. Rachel manages a farm in the park and has been experiencing nature firsthand all spring.

"Getting to know the nature around you is like getting to know your neighbors," Rachel says. "When we care for each other and work together, we all contribute to keeping our communities healthy, safe, and resilient--just like healthy ecosystems. Washington Park is a true gem in Chicago and is worth a visit!"
